Biggest January Transfer Window Deals 2025

With the transfer window now shut for January 2025, it has, indeed, been one busy period where different clubs across the continent sought strength by discarding players who are not in high demand. Money was, of course, one of the main talking points and was, indeed, under even greater scrutiny, but that being said, some big moves did go through, some as predicted, others quite surprising. From the tearful, will-he-won't-he exit of Marcus Rashford to Manchester United -- and an emotionally charged reunion at Santos with his good friend Neymar -- came the twist and turn of another transfer window.

Below, we dive into some of the bigger deals by way of impact that both selling clubs and buying teams made, plus what they all might mean on the outcome fronts for players concerned.

Marcus Rashford - Manchester United to Aston Villa (Loan)

Manchester United: D

The loan deal for Rashford brings an end to an era at United. Once the poster boy of their attack, performances had grown underwhelming, not exactly on good books with the club as well. Far from ideal for United, though, with Villa being a direct rival in the Premier League. They moved a goodly portion of his wages off, but failed to wring a purchase obligation so his future's not quite as settled as everyone might like.
Grade A- For Aston Villa

Villa did need the reinforcements up front after letting go of Jhon Duran, and Rashford is quite an interesting gamble. Once he gets with the form on for Unai Emery, this can very much be a steal this season. In Champions League terms, Villa does boast the pull of the big signing required for him to get in amongst the sharp guys.

Grade B+ FOR RASHFORD:

He wanted fresh starts. Rashford had become polarizing at Old Trafford, and this transfer to Villa provides him with the perfect avenue for the re-ignition of his career. Emery's tactical style might suit him, and if he gets enough game time, Rashford could be that deadly forward once again.

Neymar (Al-Hilal to Santos, Free Transfer)

For Al-Hilal: Grade C

Injuries prevented Neymar from ever truly justifying his monstrous wages in Saudi Arabia. Letting him go to Santos on a free transfer is far from perfect from their perspective, financially, but does let them clear their books and get on with concentrating on youngsters.
For Santos: A+

A dream return for club and fans alike. In many ways, the return of Neymar was as much a marketing coup as it was a sporting one. Still possessing immense quality, he may well be key in Santos's bid for both domestic and continental success if he can keep himself fit.

For Neymar: Grade A

It was as sentimental as it was pragmatic a move because Neymar did always talk of returning home and it allowed him to re-fire his career in the place that sparked it off. Should he remain fit, he may even have one glorious last chapter prior to retirement.
Nico Gonzalez (Porto to Manchester City, £50m)

For Porto: Grade C

Porto did not want to lose Gonzalez during the middle of the season, but City paid his release clause. They make a profit, but it's always disrupting to lose an important player in January.
Grade: B For Manchester City:

City's struggles without Rodri did force their hand, and perhaps Gonzalez wouldn't have been first choice, but Guardiola knows he can already trust a player with his upbringing from La Masia. How well that does translate when truly under the pressure of City is yet to be seen.

Grade: A For Gonzalez:

A transfer which will see him move to City from Porto in less than two years, an absolute gigantic leap career-wise - with loads of excitement and loads of scrutiny; emotions all mixed.

Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich to Tottenham, Loan)

Bayern Grade B-

Bayern would have obviously agreed to sell and agree to the deal, given they seem not even going to play the player at least this season under Vincent Kompany. It would be a move he well deserves for their star player forward.

For Tottenham: B

The reinforcements were really necessary for Spurs and Tel's versatility makes him an interesting signing for their cause; the rate things are going then £45m will prove daylight robbery for such a high 19-year-old talent.

 For Tel: B+

He needed to play desperately and that is exactly what he gets at Tottenham, obviously the level is above that of France but, if he does well, he may just get his permanent deal with someone willing to invest in his development.

Axel Disasi (Chelsea to Aston Villa, Loan)

 For Chelsea: Grade D+

Certainly stays Chelsea's transfer policy under serious question marks that paid £38.5m for him just to make him their squad man and sell him off on loan.

Aston Villa: B+

Villa needed depth back there, and Disasi seems to fit in. With everything smooth with him, there is every probability that Villa would try to hold onto him and make it permanent which again might come out in profit for them too.

For Disasi: Grade A

Much-needed move that he desperately needs, as Disasi needs minutes of game time to resurrect his international career. Villa offers the just perfect platform.

For Chelsea: Grade D

The way Chelsea have handled Felix has been dubious, at the least - sign him permanent for £42m to loan him again in. makes no sense.

AC Milan: C-

Felix is no doubt talented, but this was an uncalled-for signing by Milan. His assimilation with their tactical system is still to be seen.
For Felix: Grade B-
Still another loan move for the troubled player in search of fitting in somewhere. He has all the chances to prove himself at Milan, but his inconsistency keeps him in doubt.
Marco Asensio (PSG to Aston Villa, Loan)
For PSG: Grade C+
Surplus to requirements with the new attacking signings, dry loaning him off isn't ideal but at least some wages are cleaned.
For Aston Villa: B-
Villa keep believing in underutilised talents. In fact, he does have a set of skillsets, but the problem will be his consistency as always
Grade: Asensio: B
This transfer will keep giving him an excellent opportunity to prove himself in the competitive league
Conclusion

The 2025 January window had it all, with some massive transfers pulled out capable of changing fortunes. Brilliant signing by Manchester City-more exciting of the prospects this window, with Tottenham and Aston Villa coming out as major winners with their quality acquisitions. Chelsea's transfer policy is just bewildering, while Neymar back at Santos is emotional but calculated. All these would take some time to realize their full implications, and till then, let us hope that the best thing for the clubs and their fans is finding that their investments pay off.
