Newcastle United will be aiming to secure a spot in the fourth round of the EFL Cup when they welcome League Two side AFC Wimbledon to St. James' Park on Tuesday night. Eddie Howe’s team enters this fixture off the back of a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League , while AFC Wimbledon played out a goalless stalemate against Bradford City in their latest League Two match.

Newcastle United , despite never winning the League Cup , have twice reached the final , including in the 2022-23 season when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United. This season's edition of the competition offers a golden opportunity for the Magpies to finally claim silverware , though their passage to the third round was far from smooth , requiring a penalty shootout to edge past Nottingham Forest.

Eddie Howe’s side comes into this match on the back of a 1-1 draw against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City , with Anthony Gordon scoring a second-half penalty to earn his team a valuable point. Currently sitting seventh in the Premier League with 11 points from six games , Newcastle will aim to carry that momentum into the cup tie.

AFC Wimbledon , under the guidance of Johnnie Jackson , have had an impressive run to the third round , overcoming Bromley and Ipswich Town , the latter via a penalty shootout. The League Two club has been on a strong run , going unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions and sitting in sixth place in the league table. Although their primary focus is their promotion push , Wimbledon will relish the chance to upset Premier League opposition , having already claimed one top-flight scalp this season.

 Team News

Newcastle will be without several key players , including Sven Botman , Callum Wilson , Jamaal Lascelles , Lewis Miley , Matt Targett , and Alexander Isak due to injury. Eddie Howe is expected to make several changes to his starting lineup , with the likes of Joe Willock , Sean Longstaff , Miguel Almiron , and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka likely to feature.

While rotation is expected , Howe could still opt for a relatively strong lineup , including Joelinton , Harvey Barnes , and Fabian Schar , given that the Magpies fielded a robust team in their last EFL Cup outing.

AFC Wimbledon will look to their leading scorer Omar Bugiel , who has netted three goals so far this season , to lead the line against Newcastle. He will be partnered in attack by Matty Stevens , who has two goals in eight games. Myles Hippolyte is also expected to play a significant role in the visitors' forward play , while Jack Tilley will add creativity from midfield. Despite the challenge ahead , Wimbledon’s fitness levels should be high , having had ample rest since their last match.

  Possible Starting Lineups

Newcastle United (4-2-3-1):

Dubravka, Livramento , Schar , Burn , Krafth, Willock , Longstaff, Almiron , Joelinton , Barnes, J. Murphy

 AFC Wimbledon (3-5-2):

Goodman, Harbottle , Lewis , Ogundere, Neufville , Smith , Ball , Hippolyte , Tilley, Stevens , Bugiel

 Key Players

Newcastle United: Miguel Almiron

The Paraguayan winger , Miguel Almiron , continues to be a key offensive weapon for Newcastle United. Known for his incredible work rate , speed , and dribbling ability , Almiron is always a threat down the right flank. His ability to cut inside and create shooting opportunities with his left foot is a hallmark of his game. In a match where Newcastle is expected to dominate possession , Almiron's direct running and creativity will be crucial to breaking down Wimbledon’s defense.

 Newcastle United: Harvey Barnes

Since joining Newcastle , Harvey Barnes has added another dimension to their attack with his pace , intelligent movement , and knack for scoring goals from the left wing. Barnes is capable of taking on defenders one-on-one and is adept at finding space in the box to get on the end of crosses. His combination play with Almiron and Joelinton will be key to Newcastle unlocking a Wimbledon defense likely to sit deep.

AFC Wimbledon: Omar Bugiel

Wimbledon's top scorer this season , Omar Bugiel , will be tasked with leading the attack against Premier League opposition. The 30-year-old forward has the strength to hold up play and bring his teammates into the game , but also possesses the instinctive finishing needed to convert the rare chances Wimbledon might create. Against a rotated Newcastle defense , Bugiel’s physicality and experience could prove vital if the League Two side are to mount a challenge.

AFC Wimbledon: Matty Stevens

Partnering Bugiel up front will be Matty Stevens , who has found the back of the net twice this season. Stevens is a versatile forward who works tirelessly off the ball and makes intelligent runs in behind the defense. He’ll need to make the most of any openings he gets as AFC Wimbledon looks to create scoring opportunities against a much stronger opponent. His partnership with Bugiel will be crucial in Wimbledon’s attempts to get a foothold in the match.

  Prediction

AFC Wimbledon come into this tie in excellent form , but Newcastle’s quality and depth should prove too much for the League Two side. While the underdogs may have their moments , Newcastle’s attacking talent is likely to be overwhelming , and a comfortable home win seems the most likely outcome.
